Canada’s new Office of the Special Envoy, International Relations, Trade and Investment (SEIRTI) could play a key role in helping foster robust partnerships between Canadian stakeholders and Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to Mr. Salamu Koroma, Sierra Leone’s Deputy Director General for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
The Minister met with Special Envoy May-Marie Duwai-Sowa in Freetown on April 16, 2024 to welcome her to the ministry and discuss opportunities for cooperation. During their meeting, Mr. Koroma underscored the historical connection between the two countries, dating back to the time of the Maroons – early settlers from Nova Scotia and key contributors to the development of the Capital City Freetown – and the importance of establishing and strengthening partnerships between Sierra Leone and Canada. Mr. Salamu Koroma also expressed his belief that the Office of the SEIRTI and his ministry will maintain a close connection as they work toward common goals.
Special Envoy Duwai-Sowa also had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Saspo Sankoh, the Chief of Protocol for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, who also expressed his support for the Office of the SEIRTI and outlined the guidance and privileges associated with the role of the Special Envoy. The meeting was another significant step toward strengthening international relations, trade, and investment between Sierra Leone and Canada.
Duwai-Sowa was recently appointed to head Sierra Leone’s Office of the Special Envoy for International Relations, Trade, and Investment (SEIRTI), which is based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Born in Sierra Leone and now living in Canada, Special Envoy Duwai-Sowa holds both Canadian and Sierra Leone citizenship.
